Bio

  • The Choir is a group of 40 members comprising of staff and students. In 2001 the Choir conductorship was taken over by Mr Thembela Vokwana who was also a lecturer at the University of South Africa Musicology Department. During the same year the Choir participated at a festival organized by South African Tertiary Institutions Choral Association (SATICA). Later that year the Choir represented the Country in Singapore after having been invited by the South African High Commissioner to participate in Africa Week event.
  • Between the years 2003 to 2010 the Choir participated in the National Choir Festival, receiving accolades for second & third place (twice). Between 2008 and 2010 the Choir was a regular participant at the World War II Annual Commemorations hosted by Australian and New Zealand Embassies. In 2009 the Unisa Choir was further invited to perform at the FIFA Confederation Cup and Rugby Championship at Soccer City and Ellispark.
  • From the year 2000 to date, the Choir participated in numerous events such as Special Graduations, Chancellors Investitures, Vice Chancellors Inaugurations, Epic Celebrations (such as Unisa 135 & Unisa 145), Universities Merger Celebrations, etc.
  • As such, the Choir is fast gaining a significant reputation within the music circles. This Choir is “19 years old, not out”.
